Dermal fillers are injectable treatments designed to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and to augment lips, cheeks and other facial features. Collagen, which was introduced in 1976, was the original dermal filler product and it is still widely used today. In 1996 a new type of dermal filler called Restylane was launched by Q-Med, a leading biotechnology company based in Sweden. Following the success of Restylane, in 2000 Q-Med launched two new dermal filler treatments, Perlane and Restylane Fine Lines.
All of Q-Med’s dermal fillers are made with non-animal Hyaluronic Acid. This important feature means that unlike patients using other types of dermal fillers, for example Collagen, patients using one of Q-Med’s products do not require an allergy test because Hyaluronic Acid, the central ingredient of Q-Med’s products, occurs naturally in the body.
It is a clear jelly-like substance that is used to fill out unwanted and unsightly folds and wrinkles in the skin. Restylane Fine Lines is a finer version of Restylane that is designed for use on very fine wrinkles and folds. It can be particularly effective on vertical ‘smoking’ lines on the upper lip. It is a slightly thicker and heavier version of Restylane, which is used to for deep folds and wrinkles and lip augmentation. It can be particularly effective on naso-labial folds more commonly known as ‘smile lines’ which run from the nose to the corner of the lips. The fillers are injected into an area of the skin called the dermis, which is located just below the skin’s surface layer. Dermal fillers can be used to improve the appearance of:
· The lips (at the outer edges to add definition and also to add body to give the entire lip area the appearance of being fuller) · ‘Crows Feet’ at the corner of the eyes · ‘Frown lines’ between the eyebrows · ‘Smile lines’ between the nose and the corner of the mouth · ‘Worry lines’ that run across the forehead · Acne scars · ‘Smokers lines’ on the top lip area · ‘Marionette’ lines at the corner of the mouth · Depressions or pockmarks in the skin due to injury or disease (for example Chickenpox scars) · Unevenness in the skin following surgery or skin grafting The injections can be uncomfortable. However, in order to minimise any discomfort we apply a local anaesthetic cream to the area of the skin that is to be injected at least 30 minutes before the treatment begins.
When we use dermal fillers on the lip area we inject a local anaesthetic under the lip to ensure that the entire area is numbed before the treatment begins. The injectable local anaesthetic is more effective at numbing this area than the anaesthetic cream. Some patients have experienced minor swelling, redness and tenderness around the site of the injections. However, this typically settles down within 48 hours. However, for this reason we strongly recommend that you have treatment at least a week before any major social events to allow any swelling or redness to have completely settled. No. The effects of the treatment will wear off over time. Most treatments last between 6-9 months. However, treatments to some areas, particularly the lips, can wear off more quickly because of the level of natural movement in the area. Over time the filler will be absorbed naturally by the body. If the treatment is not repeated the treated area will return to its natural appearance.
Some patients find that a number of treatments are required to achieve the best results. A combination of dermal fillers and Botox can be a particularly effective combination because Botox maximises the impact of the fillers by reducing movement in the treated area. Furthermore, this reduction in movement increases the life of the filler by reducing the speed at which the filler is absorbed by the body. Yes. The results can very from patient to patient for a range of reasons. These reasons include:
· The part of the face that is treated
· The amount of natural facial movement in the treated area
· The condition of the skin All of Q-Med’s fillers use Hyaluronic Acid. Over 27 million patients around the world have used medical products containing Hyaluronic Acid. Research studies have shown that adverse reactions from the use of Restylane, Restylane Fine Line and Perlane are very rare, and occur in less than 1 in every 2,000 patients. Reactions can include mild to moderate swelling and tenderness around the site of injections and can remain for up to two weeks. When reactions do occur they tend to develop either within a few days of treatment or after a delay of 2-4 weeks.
Hyaluronic Acid is a non-animal based product. As a result there is no risk of transmitting disease or of causing an allergic reaction in patients with animal-based food sensitivities.
